Geography Curriculum Overview
Geography is essentially about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At Coppull St. John’s, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other curriculum areas. Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. At Coppull St. John’s, our intent, when teaching geography, is to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Equality and diversity
At Coppull St. John's, we are committed to providing a teaching environment which ensures all children are provided with the same learning opportunities regardless of social class, gender, culture, race, special educational need or disability. Teachers use a range of strategies to ensure inclusion and also to maintain a positive ethos where children demonstrate positive attitudes towards others. Support for specific individuals is well considered and planned for, to ensure that tasks provide learners with an appropriate level of challenge. At Coppull St. John's, we are committed to creating a positive geographical learning experience for all. It is our aim to promote self-esteem in pupils and help them to understand and value diversity in terms of cultures, religions, beliefs, ethnicities and social background. This is achieved by teaching a curriculum that breaks down barriers and reduces ignorance and prejudice. At Coppull St. John's it starts by the children having the opportunity to share their own personal geographies and experiences within the local area, which is then extended to exploring and valuing the diversity of different communities within England and subsequently in the wider world.
Access and inclusion
All pupils are entitled to access the geography curriculum at a level appropriate to their needs. To ensure inclusion, teachers use a range of strategies in line with the school’s inclusion policy. Independent tasks, as well as teaching, are also well-adapted to ensure an appropriate level of challenge. The school makes full use of additional adults who are deployed effectively to ensure that identified children are able to make progress in each curriculum area, according to their full potential.
Deepening spirituality
Spirituality is important to us at Coppull St. John's as we aim to implement our school values when learning geography throughout our lessons. We use a variety of resources including audio visual, texts, visits and visitors to enable pupils to understand the world they live in and to reflect on their own identity as well as that of others. A sense of awe and wonder is developed through study of the subject and a celebration for that which enriches the world for all. We encourage our pupils to believe that they can change the world for the better after continuing to acquire knowledge from this curriculum subject.
