Class 1

  • We have learnt all about Pablo the Super Banana from Fairtrade.org. Pablo was a normal banana from Columbia, South America, which then became a fair-trade banana, allowing its farmers to earn a better wage. With that better wage, the farmers could buy better food, clothes, medicine and education for their families.
  • To celebrate this, we learnt and performed the song, 'Pablo the banana is super cool!'
  • We learnt all about the Fair-trade logo, what the blue and green colours mean and then coloured in our own.
  • Year 1 wrote an acrostic poem for FAIRTRADE.
  • We learnt about foods which are Fair-trade, and Reception spotted Fair-trade foods to colour and cut out and stick in the 'trolley'.
  • We learnt why we have to buy some foods from hot countries.
  • We discussed where we spotted the Fair-trade logo in shops this week.
  • Year 1 played Fair trade Lotto, matching the fair-trade food to the name.
  • We practised doing and writing instructions - then we shared the recipe and method for making a Fair trade banana-chocolate smoothie.

For the Fair trade market we made fair trade fruit smoothies!- they were delicious!

We helped to blend all these ingredients - some of them new to us - banana, cocoa powder, avocado, blueberries, coconut flakes and cinnamon - to make the smoothies which we presented in biodegradable cups. Some of us loved it a lot! Some children thought it wasn't sweet enough so we added more blueberries!

Class 2

Class 2 looked at the production of tea. We looked closely at the process of how tea is grown, collected, dried out, crushed, shipped and distributed around the world. Class 2 looked closely at how the tea growers are supported by Fairtrade and what the money is spent on such as schools, water pumps and health centres. Class 2 carried out research linked to a tea farm in Malawi. We looked at the capital city, population, languages and found out interesting facts.

Class 2 Fairtrade

Class 3

We looked at different fairtrade products available to buy and the countries they came from; as well as where they are in the world. We decided to have a focus on rice, as it is a dish enjoyed by billions across the world! In class, we planned and prepared four different rice dishes to taste at our fairtrade market. We also made two fairtrade flapjacks. We had a wonderful time and learnt lots about fairtrade. We will discuss with our families if we can swap at least one product for a fairtrade one next time we visit the supermarket.

Class 3 Fairtrade

Class 4

During fairtrade week, Class 4 studied fairtrade flowers. We researched where fairtrade flowers are planted and grown; in countries such as: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. On Thursday, we were lucky enough to be visited by Mrs. Dando, who taught us how to arrange flowers into attractive bouquets to sell for a donation at our market. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and our creations looked amazing! The market was a huge success and our bouquets flew off the stall! We think that fairtrade week has reminded us of the importance of buying these products wherever we can and we are determined to remind others of the need to buy fairtrade in the future.
