Coppull St. John's Design and Technology Curriculum

Purpose of study

At Coppull St Johns we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them for life beyond primary education. Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Coppull St. John’s we encourage the children to use their imagination and creativity to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to wherever possible link work to other curriculum areas such as English, Maths, Science, Art and Computing. We want them to learn basic cooking skills and understand the seasonality of ingredients and how they are grown, caught and reared. We value outdoor learning and provide many opportunities for children to develop their creativity and imagination using the outdoor environment. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology equipment to develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. All children are encouraged to become innovators and risk takers. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation. We hope to foster a love of Design Technology as the children make their journey through school, giving them the opportunities, knowledge and skills needed to develop their understanding of this subject.
